What are doshas?

Ayurveda teaches that there are three key body/mind types, called doshas, which are the primary energetic forces if the body. They are called vata, pitta and kapha, and they are the subtle force behind our physical and mental functions.

When balanced, the doshas support the best qualities of our individual type such as creative expression (a positive trait of vata), analytical thinking (a positive trait of pitta) or affection and loyalty (a positive trait of kapha). When out of balance, we show the negative traits of our dosha. For example: anxiety, indecision and insomnia for vata types. Anger, impatience and frustration for pitta types. And lethargy, greed and stubbornness for kapha.

The aim of Ayurveda is to support us in deeper self-understanding and living a peaceful and harmonious life via lifestyle adjustments, breathing practices, aromas, colours, meditation and other methods from this ancient science of life.
